Accessibility

Waymark Gear should work for every hiker, whatever device, browser or assistive technology they use. Our target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, level AA, the standard US accessibility rules for websites point to.
What we do
- Keyboard. Everything you can click can be reached and used from the keyboard: menus, dialogs, the list editor's buttons, filters and sliders. A "Skip to content" link is the first thing the Tab key reaches on every page, and focus is always visible.
- Screen readers. Pages have one main area and a heading structure; form fields, icon buttons and photos have names; dialogs say they are dialogs and keep focus inside until they close.
- Colour and contrast. Text meets AA contrast in both the light and dark themes, and links in running text are underlined rather than shown by colour alone.
- Zoom and phones. Pages fit narrow screens without sideways scrolling, and nothing blocks pinch-zoom.
- Motion. If your system asks for reduced motion, animations and transitions are switched off.
- Testing. Every change is checked by automated accessibility tests (axe-core) on the main pages in both themes, and the whole site has had a keyboard review.
Known limitations
- Reordering by dragging. Items, categories and lists in the editor are reordered by dragging. You can still build and edit a list fully without dragging, but changing the order is mouse- or touch-only for now. We are working on a keyboard way to move them.
- Charts. The weight breakdown chart is a picture; the same numbers are in the list totals beside it.
- Things people post. Gear lists, photos, reviews and comments are written by members. We ask for descriptions but can't guarantee every photo has one.
- Other sites. Links to shops and brand sites take you to pages we don't control.
Tell us about a problem
If something on Waymark Gear is hard or impossible for you to use, please tell us on the Report a problem page. Say which page it was, what you were trying to do, and the browser or assistive technology you use if you can. We'll reply as soon as we can and help you get what you need in the meantime.
